What is a Green Roof?

A PlanterCell Green Roof is a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation. It is planted over a root-resistant waterproofing membrane and includes a layer which can aid in water drainage and water retention accompanied by a functional irrigation system.

These green roofs are classified into intensive green roofs (roof gardens) and extensive green roofs (ornamental, vegetable gardens).

The PlanterCell roof system provides its users with an opportunity to transfer the beauty of nature to lifeless concrete structures.

Plantercell Green Roofs

PlanterCell green roofs are available in different types of systems to suit different design requirements and site conditions. Each system has different water storage capacities, which reduces irrigation frequency. Water and soluble nutrients are stored in the reservoir to sustain healthy plant growth via capillary actions.

PlanterCell Green Roof systems are manufactured  from 100%  recycled polypropylene (UV-stabilized). They are environmentally friendly and economical, lightweight and easy to install on both concrete and metal roofs, and require minimal maintenance.

The Basic Concept

The layers of each system can be summarized as follows:

                1. Concrete Slab, Roof Deck or any flat surface

                2. Waterproofing Membrane (root resistant)

                3. PlanterCell Tray

                4. Geotextile Layer

                5. Planting Mix

                6. Plants

Connections Between Sheets

Each PlanterCell Green Roof system has its own interlocking mechanisms, save for the PlanterCell 30P, which can be connected by overlapping one row over one row of the next sheet.

Advantages of PlanterCell Green Roofs

-          High strength and durability

-          Suitable for retrofitting and/or new projects

-          Cost effective

-          Different type of systems to suit demanding design requirements and site conditions

-          Easy installation and maintenance

-          Reduces storm water runoff and slows down peak discharge

Benefits

1.) Ecological

Urban Heat Island Mitigation: Green roofs cool and humidify the surrounding air, creating a microclimate which has beneficial effects within the immediate area.

Natural Habitat for Animals and Plants: Green roofs create biodiversity, encouraging wildlife, such as birds, butterflies and insects, to remain within urban areas.

Reduction of Dust and Smog Levels: Green roof vegetation helps to filter out dust and smog particles. Nitrates and other aerosol contaminants are absorbed out of the air and rainfall and bound within the soil planting media.

Quality of Life Enhancement in the Cities: Green roofs help break the monotony of the grey concrete jungle by visually enhancing the quality of life in the cities. The blooming sky rise gardens soften urban landscapes and better people’s mental and physical health.

2.) Technical

Storm Water Retention: Depending on the design, a green roof can typically reduce storm water run-off by 50% to 90%. Additionally, the peak flow volume is greatly reduced and the peak flow period is delayed by as much as 4 hours, minimizing the impact on existing drainage systems.

Additional Thermal Insulation: Green roofs can improve the thermal resistance of the roof assembly throughout the year, especially in summer months, by helping to reduce cooling costs.

Additional Acoustic Insulation: Typical extensive green roofs (75-100mm growing media) reduce reflective sound by up to 3 dB and improve sound insulation by up to 8 dB. It is particularly useful for buildings near airports, factories or busy highways.

3.) Owner-related

Increased Life Expectancy of the Roof: Green roof helps protect the roof membrane from climatic extremes and physical abuse, thereby greatly increasing the life expectancy of the roof.

Additional Usable Space: Converting or designing normally unused roof areas into green roofs provides owners with additional usable space. Users can increase their property value by reclaiming the roof top of a building and making it an amenity to be used by the building's occupants.

Building Incentives: More and more municipalities and other government agencies are providing incentives that can help off-set the cost of a green roof.
